#ORT2012

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUzpBiEGKc0&w=450&h=259] My vacation video. We went to the Diefenbunker in Carp, Ontario, we went to Centre Block on Parliament Hill, and mostly we just had fun in Ottawa, en route to Ottawa, and en route back to Toronto. We even briefly visited Quebec, and enjoyed a nice dinner at St. Hubert.

An apology to Helen

First I’m going to start with an apology to Helen. When it was suggest that four of us share two beds in a single hotel room, I had a bit of a sense of dread, but I bottled it up, because “WOO! OTTAWA ROAD TRIP!” Now here I am, 3:30 am on Sunday morning. I only got an hour or two of sleep the previous night, if that. This night, I was smart enough to stay in when Emily, Joseph and Helen went to meet a friend of Helen’s. I spent most of that time editing the video (except for the footage that has yet to be shot) that will hopefully… Read More »An apology to Helen

Send someone to fetch us, we’re in saskatchewan

On Friday after work, Joseph, Helen, Emily and I all piled into Caroline (my car), and headed east along to 401. From Toronto to Ottawa. Since Ottawa is approximately five hours away (though that’s not counting rush hour traffic), I divided that in four, and we each had 75 minutes to fill with music. Each way… here’s my play list for going east. Movin’ Right Along – The Muppets Had to start with this as soon as I saw it. Nothing says “road trip” better than this song. Maybellene – Chuck Berry Catchy, popular, and a song about driving a car. Thought this to be appropriate. Doris Daytheearthstoodstill – Future… Read More »Send someone to fetch us, we’re in saskatchewan

Robocalls

I wish the robocall scandal would actually do anything, but I have little faith. Why? Well… In and Out Scandal (2006) Proroguing parliament (December 4, 2008) Afghan Detainee Issue (2009) Proroguing parliament (December 30, 2009) Government defends horrible actions by Helena Guergis and then throw her under the bus for reasons not made public. (2010) Bev Oda adding the word “not.” (2011) Contempt of Parliament (2011) Conservatives call Irving Cotler’s riding to sew confusion. (Dec. 2011) I think that’s a good start to a list. I’m sure I missed a LOT more. What it shows is that nothing sticks. Depressing.

Worst Oscar Upset, ever

One more Oscar post. This was definitely the worst mistake the Academy ever made in its history. Choosing Celine Dion over Elliott Smith… [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PcJO81ubI8&w=450&h=335]

taH pagh taHbe’

Congratulations to Christopher Plummer on his Oscar. As good as you were in The Beginners, to me, you will always be General Chang.

Calvin

Today would have been Calvin’s 10th birthday.

ARR! SINK!

Nerds! Please tell me I’m not the only one who shouts out “ARR!” like a pirate when I use rsync. ARR, sync matey! The sad thing is that this wasn’t the only time I was shouting “ARR!” Apparently whenever I use Final Cut Pro X and need to use the Range Selection tool, as I’m pressing the “r” key, I of course need to shout “ARR!” Now it’s time to cut the blooper reel, because you can’t let your boss get away with saying, “and really get dirty.”

Oscarpalooza – Hugo

Hugo was the last of the nine Best Picture films I had to see. It focuses on a young boy who spent his early years learning the skills of his father’s trade as a clock maker. After his father’s death, his uncle takes him to work with him in a train station, maintaining the clocks. After his uncle’s disappearance, the young man continues maintaining the clocks to avoid the slapstick Clouseau-esque Station Inspector. It’s there a relationship of antagonism and respect is built between the young Hugo and Georges Méliès. For those unfamiliar, Georges Méliès is an early film director who was a pioneer in narrative film and his most famous work… Read More »Oscarpalooza – Hugo

MacBooks Pro and Windows 7

I recently purchased some MacBooks Pro. Unfortunately at work we’re still using Mac OS X 10.6, as 10.7 isn’t very good in an Open Directory environment. Fortunately the newest MacBooks can have 10.6 installed on them. I used NetRestore to image the computers, and all was good. Except 11 of these computers were going to be used with Hebrew users. You might not know that Hebrew is written from right to left, and sadly Mac OS X is not the most friendly with right to left languages. So I needed to run BootCamp. Here’s the problem. You launch 10.6’s BootCamp and it says that it can’t run on that generation… Read More »MacBooks Pro and Windows 7
